mkiiisupra,
Back in my day, aHEM......aHEM......aHEM......sorry, had to clear my throat. Where was I? Oh yeah,......it was 64......or was it 65......we used to paint our wheels semi gloss black. Semi gloss black would shed mud off the wheels better than flat black. The wheels had red line tires (3/8" wide line) mounted on them. Our nuts were chrome (lug that is) and the front axle bearing cap was chrome also. The rear axle flange hub would get covered with aluminum foil and the wheel would hold it in place (we had no money to spend). I tried a little humor in this story, but the story is true! True rat rods depended on your income back then, and not all rat rods (very few) looked alike! Now, food for thought. Steelies with baby moons, or five spoke wheels were popular, as were the wheels I used above. Me? I'd keep the car flat black, but put a pin strip (no wider than 1/8") on the body line front to back (maybe flat red). Red line tires mounted on old Pontiac Rallies that are painted semi gloss black. I would pinstripe the edge of the raised face of the spokes (the part that was painted silver from the factory in flat red too). Done!
