Ok, A freind of mine just picked up a 84 caddy with a running 425 for a song. the body is shot but the engine runs fine. I know quite a few of you have installed 472/500 caddy engines but is a 425 similar? Is it any good or just a boat anchor? I really don`t know anything about these engines. He doesn`t know what he will do with it yet. Any sugestions?

sounds like a smog engine..

425
In 1977 Cadillac introduced a new 425 cu in (6.96 L) V8, based on the architecture of the 472, but with a smaller, 4.08 in (104 mm) bore and the same 4.06 in (103 mm) stroke. The new engine was also 100 lb (45 kg) lighter.
The 425 was offered in L33 form, with a four-barrel carburetor, producing 180 hp (134 kW) at 4000 rpm and 320 lbf·ft (430 N·m) of torque at 2000 rpm, and L35 with electronic port fuel injection for 195 hp (145 kW) and 320 lbf·ft (430 N·m) of torque, but peaked at 2400 rpm.
The 425 was used through 1979 on all Cadillacs except the Seville and 1979 Eldorados.

It was smog indeed. Same era of the low CR Olds 403 w/windowed mains and the lightweight Pontiac 301.

dean, when you mentioned a 400 engine in another thread if you were thinking Pontiac 400 I'd be going with that one. I had a 400 in a 74 GP and that engine was sweet with the right cam and not bad on gas either

Thanks for the cad info. Can it be swapped into a g-body fairly easily? I`ve been trying to convince my friend to get rid of his turbo accent and get a real car and this might be the needed catalist.

It`s for sur a Pontiac 400, wouldn`t have it any other way :D The engine is almost fully assembled and I`m just getting all the other small parts ready for a spring transplant. It`s basically a fairly stock rebuild but with smaller chambered 5C heads for a little more compression (it`s a 77 L78), a mild cam and headers. Something to have fun with while I bulletproff the rest of the driveline for the eventual "needs more power" syndrome.

with that 400 I was clocked at 143 mph on the 2 & 20 headed to the bar in Hudson I worked at. I was living in Dollard des Ormeaux at that time and that's when the QPP had the K cars so I was lucky....he came to bar looking for me cause they knew who I was and he told me what he clocked me at but of course it wasn't me driving my car then

Physically it’s the same dimensions as the 472/500s and will require the El Dorado/aftermarket pan. It’s not bolt in, you’ll have to build motor mounts and placement is critical. You can check my thread and other on swapping a 500 in a G Body for details.
