I am looking to upgrade the camshaft in my 84 cutlass supreme. It has the stock Y-Code 307 V8, which I'm planning on upgrading. I have heard that too much cam will cause the engine to perform poorly, and I don't know what is considered too much cam for the engine. I plan on putting a "17" casting intake off of a 403 on the engine, along with a header-back dual exhaust system and tuning the Q-Jet. I know the stock cam is a Hydraulic Flat Tappet, so is that substantial or could a solid lifter cam be fitted? The car will be a daily driver, but I want some more performance out of the engine. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Aftermarket cams in 307s don't fare well normally. I'd go with your exhaust plans and use the stock intake. A new timing chain does wonders for the 307. Depending on the trans, (3 speed or 4 speed) a rear gear change will wake up your take off drastically. If you do cam it, go just over stock. You won't be getting too much from a 307 without spending a lot, then you might as well get the Olds 350. (A direct bolt in for the 307) Your upgrades will make a bigger impact with a 350 and still be drivable. IMHO
