Akron, Oh.
Building a 383 with a hydraulic flat tappet. Probably going to use Iron Eagle Heads. Dont know much about camshafts. I do know that I want it to be somewhat aggresive. I just don't know what would be too much lift, how much duration, things like that. Any good examples/ experiences? Any suggestions would help.

it depends on what you're doing, looking for, compression, exact build specs, trans, gearing, stall, RPM's...
i'd call comp cams and/or other cam professionals and ask them.
i can say that i like my compcams Xe274h-10 but kind of wish i went bigger and had some lope.
oh, if at all possible, get a hydraulic roller. the flat tappets are picky about oil and it can cause major problems. and use the springs the cam manufacturer recommends.

I second the comments above, not enough info.

First need specs of the car, then your goals.

Go to Competition cams web site and they have a free download that gives you a program that will suggest the right cam for what you want. All you have to do is put in your specs on your car and it will tell you what cam they recommend along with the part #. I have it on my computer and it works great. Ironically the cam they suggest for my motor has similar specs as the one I already have in the motor and it isn't one of their cams. I just got lucky I guess. It is a awesome program and it is free. Try it out. It is called Cam Quest.
Here is the comp cam page:

Have fun

Thanks for the help. Btw, I will be running 10.7:1 compression, a holley 750cfm vaccum sec. carb, a th 350 transmission. I havent figured out what converter yet or the gearing for the rear end. But I really appreciate you guy's help.

Has anyone heard anything bad about adjustable cam gears?

I have never used them other than the multiple keyway sets on a pushrod engine. I have known of them in OHC engines though, and you should know what you are doing before you make any adjustments.

unless you go nuts and make it an interferience engine, you won't be able to adjust the cam too far. in terms of damage, not bad performance that is. just make sure that the bolts can't back out!
