I'm converting to a floor shifter and found a factory floor consloe to fit my 84 GP, but have not bought it yet because it doesn't have the shfter. Does anyone know if I could used a B&M or Hurst shifter with the factory console? I wanted to know before I buy it.

Buy it. All the g-body floor shifters break. Its usually the white plastic piece or the spring. At least with the Regal or the Cutlass and I think the GP is the same.

yes, the holes inthe sides of my console have since been covered over with new carpet. that is a b and m pro stick mounted to the console with brackets on the inside and then i cut a piece of thin plastic to make the bezel.

Thanks Slimbo5. The pictures are a be help with given me and idea for what I wanna do. Is the B&M Zgate shifter good for strret driving or do you recommend another type shifter?

we used the B&M shifter from a 3rd Gen Camaro/Firebird in my friends 87 Monte SS.. it took a few mods including trimming the shifter lever opening but it fit it works nicely and looks great!

Ivan, how did you make out. I am loking at doing the same thing and would love to hear your result.

Sadly, you would have to cut and modify any G-body console to accept any B&M or Hurst shifter. And with prices only going up on decent consoles, I'd consider what you've got before you grab for the saw. There are plenty of cracked up consoles out there that with a little fiberglass and a bit of time, no desecration of any decent console has to occur.
Factory shifters really aren't too weak for daily driving, but when compared to any aftermarket they just don't measure up. But yes, beat the piss out of a factory shifter and it will likely fail. Flat out though, the T-handles themselves are junk, I have a ball style with the button on top from a 81' Camaro and it is much better.

I am trying to use a B&M Quicksilver with a console I got at the junkyard from a 79 Grand Am. The console needs carpet, but after painting it Light Slate Grey (a cusotm mix SEM color for GM), I too am having second thoughts on cutting, as the top insert is from a Grand Am (black w/ silver).
