I have an 1983 El Camino that I cannot get the key to turn all the way into the accessory position.

I have changed the ignition key switch assembly and adjusted the electrical switch position down on the column. Now if I turn back to accessory, the radio will power on but the switch will spring back to off if I do not hold the ignition in the accessory position.

I would love to switch my whole column out with a delay wiper column anyways, but they are scarce in my area.

Any advice would be appreciated

sounds like your ignition switch is defective which is the switch on the column, they are not expensive...

It is not so much that the power will not come on in accessory, its more that the key switch will physically not stay in accessory. I had all the bolts out of the electrical switch and had it hanging free of the pushrod, and it acted the same.

you can take a screw driver and put the ignition switch in accessory position and it will stay in accessory if the ignition switch is not defective. Why did you adjust your ignition switch?

I took it loose to make sure the switch was not bottomed out and pushing against the pushrod, holding it off of the accesory detent. It might be a few days before I can pull the steering wheel off to check, but if i recall from when I originally changed it out, it turned and clicked into accessory with no issues when I used a screwdriver before.

Oh, another interesting fact about it, I cannot turn the key out of run with it in gear. Also, I have to turn the key all the way to run to let me shift out of park or neutral.
