I've seen the same craigslist ad for a bolt-on fiberglass Monte hood for months. I thought to myself, fiberglass is good but why not make a carbon fiber one? Does anybody know if this would be cost effective or useful?

im guessing it will be way lighter then stock hood. carbon fiber that is.

Thats what I'm hoping for. Plus carbon fiber looks so cool 8)

There was an episode on How It's Made that showed how body kits were made of carbon fiber. I swear I saw on some site that a guy had a pair of carbon fiber doors on his T-Type. It even had a picture of the car and they looked like carbon fiber, but I can't find it or anyone who makes them. I think hoods would sell as long as the quality is good. It would be great if someone made carbon fiber hoods, trunk lids, doors, header panels, bumper fillers and fenders

I saw an episode of Musclecar on tv a while ago and they made a fiberglass hood for something using the original as the mold. Thats what gave me the idea and the process for fiberglass is basically the same for carbon fiber.

it should be simple, i wonder if you can call a company that make fiberglass ones and see if you can make a cf( the only thing i can think of is that cf has to be baked not sure if its the same for fiberglass)? that would be amazing, i would love to get one for my cutlass! Acually theres a company near me that make custom cf stuff i wanted to see if they can make me a cf header panel like they make for 1st gen camaros!

I also thought about making the SS nose out of carbon fiber. The urethane oiginals are heavy and floppy so why not make a carbon one? I've seen fiberglass ones for El Caminos so I'm sure it can be done, it's just a matter of how long it will take.

I was also trying to find a company that sells a cf cowl hood center that I can bolt on to mine but no luck 🙁

Cant really compare fiber glass process to Carbon fiber. The fiber glass hoods are made with chopped fibers shot out of a gun into a mold that has had a gel coat applied in it then resin is applied and more glass is shot into it and it is rolled smoothly into the mold. Carbon fiber things that have the cool look are made with a sheet of material laid into on or over a mold and multiple layers of material and resin are applied that is using a wet layup process. It can be vacume bagged, or vacume infussed if the builder has the ability. There is also a process where it is laid up with a pre preg material and baked. That is more for things like shafts and fishing poles. The amount of carbon Fiber it would take to make a "Good " hood for a g body would cost insane amount of money. Not to mention I havnt seen a single sheet that was wide enough to do the whole hood without a seam. If you were able to make a mold for one you would want to make a female mold of it and lay it up top side down like as if the hood was upside down. Best place to get material for the do it yourself is Soller Composites online. Oh and you can get some hybrids that are any color you want and black weave. Like Blue black, Flor green and black. You will also need ALOT! of West systems Epoxy which is going to set you back about another $150. You would easily have over $1000 of materials into a project that prob wont turn out very well do to lack of knowledge working with the material and lack of proper equipment and mold making ability. Your best option is to get whatever hood you want and have it film dipped in a carbon fiber finish and clear over it. The film Dipping you can get whatever weave patern you want. Hell you could do all the parts if you wanted
