So I found a screamin' deal on a posi rear-end. but one problem... the gears are 4.56.

What series carrier is that, and what other gears could I use with it?? I want to run 3.08s 3.42s or 3.73s, is it possible to use the same carrier??

Probably not. That is, not unless the carrier was run using a thick ring gear, in which case it may be a 2 or 3 series.

Well they could be using a 2 series carrier with a "thick" gear or a spacer, in which case you would be able to run 3.08's or numerically higher with a spacer or by running a thick gear.

Or they are using a 3 series carrier which you would have to run at least a 3.23 or numerically higher ratio.

This is also assuming that it's a 7.5 rear. One other thing to note when you run a 4.56 gear it requires a special cross shaft(it's clearanced for the gear), you might be able to reuse it, but you might need a new one. Kind of a minor detail but just figured i'd put it out there.

yeah, it's a 7.5, and the ring gear is like 2-3" thick. So I can run 3.42 gears then??

It sounds like they are using the 2 series with a "thick" gear. That means you will need "thick" 3.42's or spacer as long as it really is a 2 series.

he said from what he remembers, it had either 2.73 or 3.08 when he got it.

Either one of those ratios would have been on a 2 series carrier, so everything is pointing to it being that. Should be good to go with the 3.42's as long as you get the thick ones.

awesome!! this is my birthday/christmas present this year then 😀
