im looking for a 8.5 rear end for my cutty, having a hard time finding one, but.. when choosing gears for the rear end what should i go with? i wanna go with 3:7, but would i need an over drive transmition for that? and if im on the highway what would i tac out at?? i know it isnt really a highway gear, i dont do much ghway driving anyway, but wouldthose gears be alright on the highway? if not what should i choose?

I wouldn't be able to stand 3.73's on the highway without overdrive. Tire size will be a factor in rpm but figure on running 3000+.

would be around 3500 you think?? and will it just be an annyoing wineing noise? or will u be able to feel it? and how fast do u think i would be able to go with those gears without messing anything up

I used to run 3.73:1 gears on a 3spd TH350... I turned about 3000rpm @ 60mph

... I hated it...

I am now running a 700r4 with overdrive, and 3.42:1 gears. I turn 1800rpm @ 60mph

i got a th350 do u think i should stick with like a 3:42?? i like the acceleration of the higher gears but want something alright on the highway

my car see's the highway just as much as it see's the inner streets. So personally, I hated turning such big rpms. It was noisey, and gas mileage just sucked.

a buddy of mine just went to 3.08:1 gears with a similar transmission setup. He's braught the highway rpms down to 2200 and it's much more bearable.
... mind you, he's not concerned about acceleration. His 468 pulls the car hard, even with 3.08:1 gears

It all depends on your driving prefereance... If you're not bothered by high rpm cruising, then I would recommend 3.42s or even 3.73s.
but, I think 3.08s will do just fine. You can also look for some 3.23s

after all, some of these cars came with 2.56 gears being pulled by a dieing 140hp donkey of a motor.

I have 3:73's in my Monte with a th350 trans, running 245/45/17 tires that are 25.68 inches tall. I turn a hair over 3000 rpm at 60 mph, which sucks on the highway!!

if your gonna do somewhat of alot of highway driving go no more then 3.42. but if acceleration isn't a HUGE factor go with a 3.08 or 3.23. you will be glad u did

I have a th350 with Auburn posi differential and 3.42 gear in back. At 70MPH I am just under 3000RPM and about 13MPG highway. YUCK.

I just invested $2000 to have my transmission totally rebuilt by AMMCO and I plan on it lasting another 30 years. The car originally had a V6 with I think a 2.41 rear gear.

When I had the gear swapped out I did not know much about rear ends. I THINK the differential I have can only do 3.23 ratios and UP. There is another one that does 3.08 and DOWN.

in 1980, according to my manual, the Cutlass had 2.14, 2.29, 2.41, 2.56, 2.73, 2.93, 3.08, 3.23, and 3.42 gears available.
