One of my customers (1998) was in Southern Illinois. They had the equipment for the head lamps. At the time they were doing all the Toyota and Honda units.
The equipment is basically a vacuum chamber and all the plastic goes in on trees just like a model car but full size. Inside the chamber the metal is vaporized and the vapor settles on the exposed plastic. Units come out with mirror finish.
