Okay will the oven cleaner hurt the stainless steel? i figured it if it worked on the aluminium it would also work on stainless steel. Whats good for stainless then.

I'll try the carb cleaner for the tar...thanks.

i just buffed and polished my front fender trim and the difference is night and day, the moe time you spend the more it looks like chrome.....after i eat lunch im going outside to polish up the trunk lid trim.....not sure how long it wil last but as of right now i'm satisfied

What about clear coating the trim, has anyone tried it? I've cleared wheels and headlights successfully, but not trim.

That's basically what anodizing is, clear coating for aluminum. A paint type clear coat doesn't work real well. It's surface needs a tooth to keep it from peeling and polished alum doesn't have enough bite to hold it. Also, clear paint on alum will decrease the luster of the polishing.

I'm not sure about clear powdercoating alum. I've heard many stories but never had it done myself.

Alot of the plating shops can strip, straighten, re-polish, and re-anodize the trim. They can also straighten and repolish the stainless. Stainless doesn't need a coating.

If you've sucessfully cleared wheels, then you may be able to use the same procedure on the alum trim.

don't forget about Zoop Seal, its like a wax that seals the polished aluminum from oxidizing for up to 2 years according to them, it's kinda pricey and I've never used it, but if it works, it might well be worth it
