Just wondering about the emissions systems on these cars. I plan on getting the factory 307 Olds rebuilt in my '86 Regal rebuilt, but wanted to know if removing the AIR system would hurt emissions? The goal is to basically leave the engine stock but add headers and true dual exhaust (ie: keep the computer, etc.) . I would like to use dual aftermarket high-flow cats. I don't see new cars using air injection anymore, so would it still be necessary as long as the engine is running properly? Right now the car burns oil (1 qt. a week when driven daily), which is the main reason for the rebuild, still passes emissions with lots of tweaks, uses original style single exhaust with cat.

You most certianly do not need the AIR system. Toss it in the trash.

You may want to reconsider rebuilding that 307 though. A stock 307 is bad enough, but your later swirlport headed version of the 307 is even worse.

I temporarily swapped a low milage, stock VIN Y 307 into my car. This was the better non-swirl port version. I had my top of the line headers, X-pipe true duals, better stall, and 3.73 gears. Lets just say it wasn't fast and leave it at that. Yours would be even slower still. You won't be happy. You have been warned!

Well, I will get rid of the AIR system if that is the case. I actually like the way the car runs/power as it is, I just can't stand breathing burnt oil fumes anymore and having to mess with it all the time to get it to pass emissions. I don't see why rebuilding it and opening the exhaust would hurt anything. It gets great gas mileage and starts in the dead of winter with no issues. I don't want to go backwards with technology or get more cubes for the sake of more cubes or start over with an engine that might not be any good (ie: cracked block). Just didn't know if the AIR system actually did anything or not, don't want to spend money replacing parts on the system if it isn't really necessary or would hinder the computer or anything if it was removed. The car is a daily driver. Rated at 140 hp from the factory it sure seems like it at least has that now still even being worn out.

the AIR system actually pumps air into the exhaust system so the cat "lights" off faster... As for the emissions inspections here in CO they actually inspect for it and fail you if it's missing. Don't know how lax are the emissions laws are in Delaware but it is technically illegal.. Are you still using the CCC system?
