Did the 87 SS's come with a column shifter and floor shifter? Im looking at an 87 and it's in the column. Just want to be sure it's a true SS.

If in fact it is a true SS, how hard is it to convert to the floor?

Thanks,
J

They were available in column or floor shift check the 8th digit on the vin a g in this location is a true ss i have 2 86 and 1 87 all true ss and all 3 column shifts

Thank you so much for that info..... I have it in the column of my SS silverado so maybe I can live with it.... 🙂 Just didnt know for sure and didnt want to get played.

To convert to floor you'll need the shifter, cable, gear selector lever, and bracket that bolts to the trans pan that holds the cable in place. A guy on eBay that runs the Monte Carlo store has a couple depending on what trans you have. Did your car originally come with a column shift and bench seats? Or a console with column shift?

Good question... The guy im buying it from is the second owner. First owner put 05 Pontiac GTO power buckets in. I'll see if I can get more info.

I don't know if this is true or not but supposedly, all MCSS's came with the brackets for a center console. I would check just to make sure seeing as if you want to convert to floor shift you'll need to slice the carpet to bolt the rear console mount to the bracket. It'll have 2 brackets if it was a console car, one for the rear mount on the shifter and the other is a long but small bracket for the rear mount.

It's not true. My split bench SS has no console brackets. There is probably only a bracket for the rear of the console. The front of the console would attach to the shifter (which is separately affixed to the floor).

Right yeah saw the floor of a bench car and saw the back bracket, wasn't sure if the owner cut it out or it never came with it.

and you will probably want a column too, don't ask me why but it's a thing I have about when people convert to floor shifts and leave the column shift column minus the lever.

Haha whoops, forgot about the column! Me and my dad are doing the swap now it can be a bit tedious collecting all the parts, but we mocked everything up yesterday and the way the bucket seat sits and the console with the shadow box and the MCSS wheel with a tilt column and everything is black on the column 8) . Definately worth it.
