I just picked up the gran natl gauge pod for the console. I am trying to find a way to secure the gauges in the pod. The brackets that autometer sell do not fit...How did the factory secure the gauges?

When I had a dual gauge console pod in my '87 the gauges fit so snug I didn't use anything to hold them in other than friction.
Are your's loose?

That factory didn't have a console gauge pod did they? I thought those were all aftermarket.

Nope, they do fit pretty snug, but I figured its gonna be a daily driver in NY, so plenty of vibrations to deal with. Other than that I just thought it would also help with keeping them aligned.

Dont really know what you guys are talking about, but double sided tape could werk maybe...

Where does that install on the console or do you have pics of it installed? And will it work for a cutlass with a console because I am thinking about getting one?

It fits in the console just under the radio. Yes it will fit a Cutlass. I had one in my '87.

Well, its a problem with all of the "gauge pods" out there. They don't allow enough room to use the fasteners that the gauge manufacturer's included with their gauges.

Autometer, Classic Instruments (and I'm sure others) use a 'U' shaped piece of metal that slide down over two studs on the back of the gauge. You install two nuts on these studs and tighten down the gauge. The 'U' shaped piece of metal makes contact with the backside of whatever panel you have the gauge in and is what then holds it in place.
VDO uses what they call a "Spin-lok 360* mounting system" on all of their electric Vision series gauges. Its essentially just a huge plastic nut that threads onto the outside circumference of the gauge itself.

At any rate, neither of these systems will fit a lot of these gauge pods because the gauge pod doesn't leave enought room around the side to use them.

However as I said above, the gauges I've ever used have always been a pretty snug fit and I've never had a problem with them rotating in the pod.
My brother has a 3 gauge A-pillar pod and a 2 gauge T-Top pod and the gauges have never moved since we put them in.

I searched google for installed pics of this console pod and still couldn't find any. Nevermind, I just found some pics. Will these work for a 85 cutlass with a factory console????
