Ok so my car has always had a slow leak, about 1 qt in 4 months, but now all of a sudden it started leaking a lot more. It's not coming from the valve covers, I'm hoping its just the oil pan gasket, but I'm never that lucky. What are some other common spots that will leak? Its still got the original 307/thm200 transmission. Thanks!

Damn, that was exactly what I was hoping NOT to hear lol 🙁 . Is there any particular brand for the seal y'all would recommend?

If it is the rear main seal, it probably has a rope style kind, which sucks. I forget what year/ size engine, but you can get a two-piece rubber seal for a Ford engine. I think its a 460 or something like that, but I am not sure.

Can you tell us exactly where the oil is coming from? It might not be the rear main seal.

Well, I haven't had a chance to really get under the car, but will on friday, I'll let you know then...

How involved is changing out a rear main seal on a 307?

I dont think it should be too bad depending on how good you are with cars. I think the hardest part is removing the oil pan. You will need to un-bolt the motor mounts and jack up the engine. Use a regular floor jack on the harmonic balancer with a piece of wood. Remove all of the oil pan bolts, I believe you will have to completely remove the engine mounts to get to all of the bolts. Take off the oil pan, it might take some force to get it free. Once that is off, remove the oil pump. Then remove the main bearing cap at the back of the engine. The seal will be in the cap, there is two halves of it. You should be able to pull out the rope seal with some needle nose pliers or something like that for the halve of the seal that is on the engine block. Follow the directions for installing the new seal and that should be it. Make sure you follow the torque specs for everything when you are putting it back together.

Since you already have it all apart, you might as well replace the oil pan gasket and oil pump, maybe even the motor mounts if they are in rough shape.

Sorry if my instructions are a little confusing, ask if you dont understand everything. Also, if I missed anything please let me know. I think I got everything covered but not positive.
