i have a 79 el camino with a messed up speedometer and no tach, but i have a non running 85 cutlass with some nice gauges, assuming that they all work, would it be worth it to try to get it into my elco? and has any one done something similar?

You'd have to swap the complete dash, kind of a pain to do so, but if you're confident in your wiring capabilities then it's doable.....I swapped a buick dash into my malibu, lol.

Yeah you would need to swap the entire dash and also heater ducting. I swapped a 85 Cutlass dash in my 79 Monte Carlo. It can be done, it wasnt extremely hard to do, just time consuming.
