My brothers 88 cutlass supreme suddenly stopped shifting. I was driving it going about 35-40 MPH it shook and I stopped at the upcoming red light and after that it wouldn't shift. The car shifted fine before this. The car has the 2004r transmission. What could be the problem?

So, when you came to a stop did the engine die?
The fluid is full, nice and pink and not burned smelling?
It was shifting smooth before?

The car was shifting fine before this. It didn't turn off when the shaking happened but it did turn off when I pulled over to the side. The fluid at the time seemed fine. Fluid currently doesn't smell burned. The car did move after this happened.

Shift linkage nut inside the pan backed off and it's stuck in two gears at once . Drop the pan and put it back together. That's how I got my car cheap took 15 min to fix.

^ that sounds like a possibility but also my 88 did this 1x and it was just a vacuum line had become unplugged and I found it hanging. Plugged it back in and let the car run 5 mins w a lil trans fluid topped off and everything was normal again after I went for a short drive.

How do I check if TV cable is stuck?
What do you mean by the shifts would stack?

That could be it but I'm just not ready to drop the pan. If I have too I will. I would just like to try and check the simple things first.

Where is that vacuum line?

It could be any of the vacuum lines. The second time it happened to me it was just a bad leak from dry rot ( I was in NM and some of the vac lines were circa 1991 - 93) I could still drive in 1st gear but it sounded terrible. I ended up replacing them all out of frustration after that and mine have colored zip ties tagged so I can tell which 1 goes to what. If you don't see 1 hanging somewhere or a gaping gash in 1 / a pale dry rotted vac line than it's 1 of the other problems these guys mentioned and don't worry about it. You could also make sure the charoal canister isn't chock full of ashes that caused me an issue 1x too.

Make sure the other issues guys said first; it takes all day to redo the vac lines. I couldn't tell you much more about it because I fixed them all same time. Someone did post a chart before on which vac lines you can eliminate and which you need to keep but I can't find that chart. I decided to keep all mine but I wish I had used the chart instead, and deleted unnecessary vac lines. The only way to delete all them is to go computerless, but then you lose 5mpg and the car will not run very well if you do.
