Dana 44 for a G-body

Looks a lot like the Dana 60 in my wagon (aaaa duh?). It definitely would be one of those fun rare trick parts to own.

Supposedly there were some available as warranty replacements but that may have been F body. Speaking of F body, why in the heck did they use the 7.625" behind the 4th gen with 275 hp right out of the gate? Had to be cheaper. I would like a WS6 Firebird but that spindly rear makes me say, no thanks.

The 7.5/7.625" is fine if you take care of it... But, a 8.5" or bigger is just peace of mind.

Another benefit to the Dana 44 is the axles are held in place like the 9" Ford. To me, the Dana 44 would have been the better rear to put in the Grand National and Cutlass 442.

The Dana 44 was an over the counter part for the 3rd gen f-bodies. Back in '91, a guy I know that worked for a GM dealership ordered one to put in his '90 IROC. I just happened to walk into the shop and saw it laying behind his car. Was still in it's heavy duty plastic case. Had disk brakes on it and 3.73 gears in it. Prettiest thing I ever did see. Well, one of the prettiest.

'8.5" peace of mind' - we bought an 8.5" quite reasonably IMO ($600), but after looking at those spindly 28 spline axles we bought an 8.6 diff and a set of 31 spline Moser axles. The Moser's vs. the stock 8.5" were night and day. I then pulled out one of the 7.625 S10 axles we were running in the stock G-body 7.5" and compared that. I was dumbfounded at the size difference (and weight!!!)

I guess I needed more 'peace of mind' lol 🙂

Weight and reciprocating mass becomes an issue of too much of a good thing when optimizing a combination. I am on the fence right now about selling my 8.5" and buying another Strange S60. But, the thing about the S60 is it is so damn heavy, and the R&P and axles are so large it may be doing more harm than good in the wagon - an upgraded 8.5" may have made more sense.

The Dana 44 looks like a perfect compromise.
