Hi

I have a friend with a corvair on a g body frame. He was going to install new axle seals. When he removed the cover there is a s or z shaped part. What is it and how do you need to remove it to pull the axles. They know some about g body doffs. I know nothing. 😀

Thanks.

you have to pull the pinion shaft out to remove the c clips to slide the axles, the s spring remains in place

the spring provides pressure to the side gears which press against the clutch packs which is how the posi works. Once the pinion shaft is out the axles can be pushed in and the c clips can be removed....and to put the axles back in is just a reversal

when your taking out the bolt that locks in the pinion shaft use a 5/16 6 point wrench. I use the combination wrench that they sell for brake bleeders, a 12 point will most likely round off the head

Thanks.
I am not the one working on it. Just the middle guy here asking.
So what do you need to do to get to the pinion shaft. I am being told it is difficult

the pinion shaft is the one you see going through the S spring. You rotate the carrier till you see the 5/16 bolt and remove it. Then you slide the shaft out about 1/2", if you push it out too far you won't be able to spin the carrier to pull the shaft out. If you have trouble pulling the shaft out then push it in so about 1/2" slides out the other side and then turn the carrier. The you can use the hole in the shaft to pull it out.

or the head of the bolt just breaks off which tends to happen from time to time. i never had a problem with the wrench...it's a cross pin, you'd think they'd use a larger bolt so the head wouldn't break off when you try to take it apart! i think the bolt is too small for it's purpose.
