ik found a complete t type motor for 450 bucks not too far from me. i have a 442 and thought it would be sweet to do a turbo motor in it but want some good power like a stock gn. what is the differnace between a gn and t type motor besides the intercooler? if i buy this and throw it in with some cheap mods and aftermarket intercooler would i have some good power? motor has sat for 10 years but said to have been cranked over ever so often and both the motor and turbo still spin as they should.... 450 seems cheap even if i parted it out but maybe not if a t type motor has nothing on the gn. are the long block assemblies the same as a gn? this could be a cool deal

T-Type and GN motors are identical, with the exception of the GNX, but the year of origin of the motor makes all the difference. The early ones were carbureted and not too exciting. In '84 IIRC fuel injection came into the picture and hp went up to 200. Intercooler was added for '86 and power went up a bunch more. My best advice would be to get some numbers off the engine and do some research.

Hey! I have a carb turbo, its sorta exciting! 😀

The SFI swap isnt exactly easy, gotta swap wiring harnesses, gas tank, this, that ect. End up pulling the dash too. Unless it is COMPLETE as in everything you need, including wiring, trans, ECM. Unless you really want a turbo 3.8 in your car, put in a SBO or something like that. Id do it, but Im kinda stupid.

No offense intended, but I had a few of the 78-80 models when they were new. If you have one that runs smooth, reasonably strong, and doesn't drink gas even when you don't have your right foot buried in the carpet, my hat's off to you! You must be a pretty decent wrench, not "kinda stupid".

I ment I was stupid enough to spend $500 for an engine into a $1500 car and spend another $2000 doing it. Im stupid enough to mess around with stuff that shouldnt be done.

Ohh, and if your swapping a intercooled motor in, you gotta buy a scanmaster or powerlogger. I think it would be awesome to have a turbo 442 though. Call it a 461? 4 speed auto, 6 injectors, single exhaust (sorta).

I think there is a bunch of us who can make that claim.... 😳

I resemble that remark!

If it has a carburator it's oldetr than 1984!

If it has the turbo towards the back of the engine (near fire wall) it's a Hot Air car with no intercooler (1984-1985)

If the turbo is up front then it's more likely a 1986-1987 (Same engine that came in ALL the turbo regals! and this is the engine you want! More horsepower than all the rest.

it is not carbed! i have had one of those and they are a waste of time.... no offense to anyone who has one. it is a 84 efi t type motor with around 100k on it with no harness or computer. i see no reason why wiring would be a issue, swap out the computer and run the harness to the kick panel... heck turn it into a 3 wire hook up like my tpi setups i have done. i already have the z code 200r4 in the car so thats not a issue. i was just thinking that a turbo 442 would be pretty sweet, you couls be in the same crowd as the GN guys but with a cutlass 442. the guy is asking 450 and has had it for sale for awhile so i was thinking of low balling at 300 and see what he says, worst he says is no right? i figure aother 400 in harness and computer used of the net... i already have a spare gn tank that i was gonna use on a tpi motor. only issue is see after that is exhaust
