I must be a cave man because I always used a extra long pair of Snap On Needle nose pliers and just twist them in.

Yep that doesnt work anymore on the Fords
 
The defining reason on which cars use them and which don't are where the parking break is located. If it's part of the caliper, they usually need to be screwed in. If they're separate, usually small brake shoes, then the caliper can merely be pushed in. This is not a hard rule, but most common.
