does a 86 cutlass have a internal or external regulator

need to know if the 86 cutlass has a internal regulator or external regulator for the alternator. and if it is external where is it located. i see something that looks like a alt reg on the driver side of engine bay by the the wiper motor
 
GM stopped using external regulators around 1970. So whatever your looking at isn't what you think it is. :mrgreen:
 
Yes gm stopped using the external regulator somwhere in the 70's, your 86 should have an internal regulator so it's all built into the alternator as one unit. However newer vehicles are starting to use external regulators, not the old contact points of the 70's but fancier units that use the computer to regulate the voltage coming out of the alternator.
 
okay thanks im gonna have to follow the wiring to the piece im looking at to see where it goes
