To try to keep it from beating the hell outta the underside of your car in case of u-joint or yoke failure. And to keep it from pointing downward and possibly launching your car if it catches on something.

quite often, if you run slicks especially, your tires will hook and with all that power going thru your driveline, something's gotta give...

The driveshaft u-joints are usually the first, and with that gone, your driveshaft is free to spin and jump around. If it travels up, it'll likely damage your floor, and maybe go right thru and hurt you. If it travels down, it may catch the ground and flip your car.

... the loop just acts as a casing to contain the driveshaft if the u-joints break. And it's highly recommended when running slicks, or decent amount of power.
