Greetings Dr79 & all; Due to my poor computer skills I posted this in the wrong thread. So I'll use the senior moment excuse.
Boy did you pick a favorite subject! I was 23 the summer of 69 & if I could turn back the clock that would be the summer! I had one close friend with a 68 Z (same cam, crank, rods, pistons, heads, intake & carb) & I knew a couple of other guys that had 69 Z's. They were like dog hair, they were everywhere. 7000 RPM right off the show room floor, zippy & were rated at 290 HP. But as we all know they made a bit more. I had seen some run on dynos way back & they made around 325 to 335 stock. With distributor & carb work, a set of headers you could make some serious power above 5000 RPM. I was fortunate to be running a L-78 rat Camaro during that period so they (Z-28's) were just a lunch time treat. GM was advertising the Z-28 a bunch so they sold a lot. GM didn't advertise the L-78 so not so many were built. And most guys thought they )Z-28's) were fast because they would eat most Fords & Mopars other Chevys with Hydraulic lifters. But they were no match for a larger solid lifter engine in the same weight body. I'll try to post again later & tell ya about the 331 My good buddy & I just built. Thanks for the time travel subject, Ol'e Bob.
Ps: The 68Z just drove away from this GT350, EASY. Sorry no picture of the 68Z. But I may have a picture of one of the 69's, I'll see if I can find it.

If in fact you a 73 z motor in your car (L82) and it's low mileage leave the short block alone, good set of heads, cam, and intake and you will have a nice power plant

Just found out for sure its not an l82. I going back and forth between 2 motors. The dz and a pretty well built 355. Both built pretty well and will be in front of a built th350. Should prob start a new thread and get some opinions on the 2. Thanks

I would stay away from the 302 and go with cubes(torque) Sounds like you have a 4.56 rear - hope its not a 7.5 - so your probably going to be aggressive on the cam. As I said before it's the total package.
