Yes the cheap man is back. Ok, it looks like I might be getting my hands on a complete 455. I will be doing a complete teardown and reassembly to clean everything. I want a cam between mild and medium because I still want it to make a ton of torque. This much I know, will also be going with an E-brock performer intake and probably a holly 750 carb. That about all I have planned at this moment. I know I want it to make roughly 450 horse and still keep at least 500 ft/lbs of torque. (No I don't know the year of the block yet.) I have also been tossing around the idea of a blower, but I'm thinking I'll have to have forged internals for that. Any ideas on what direction I should take, I'm open to any ideas at this point.

Thanks!

I think that combo in a stock olds 455 would yeild around 370 HP at the crank. I think that the heads need lots of work to acheive the 450 HP range...

370hp on smog heads? Or the pre-1970 10:1 heads?

I was refering to the smog heads because said he is on a tight budget... The pre 1971 heads cost more....

A '70 W-30 455 is good for 380 hp and 510 ft. lbs in stock form. Help an Olds motor breathe better and they pick up a lot of power. Those ebay heads are a rip off. Try and find some C heads, or save up for some Edelbrocks.

Head work is one of the best ways to gain power.

Olds big block (400, 425, 455) heads all have about the same size chambers except for the D heads, which came on 68-69 W-30s and Hurst/Olds (not cheap). The compression was changed with the dish of the piston. Valve sizes vary through the years. Early heads do not have hardened valve seats to run with unleaded gas, but some say this isn't a problem - I don't know for sure.

What heads are on the engine now? Do you know the compression ratio? Is this going to be for the street or strip or both?

Matt

I haven't bought the engine yet, but even if I don't get this one, I will be going with a 455. It'll be street/strip looking to have it in the 11-12 sec range. more than likely it'll be a later block 455.
