hey guys got a new question for ya.....just got my 1978 el camino with an unknown year 350 motor in it,it came with no fan blade on it just a 10" electric fan on the radiator, also it wasnt equipped with a/c,but now im putting on a new condensor evap and compressor for a/c (cause im in florida) and i want to put a flex fan on it for cooling im looking at a 6 blade, 18" compressor worx fan blade,my questions are.......is that good enough and what spacer should i get(how close to the radiator?) i want to put this on and take that electric 10" and put it on the other side of the rad blowin in,whats ur thoughts on this any info is appreciated, cause ive only drivin this thing 2 blocks then parked it to finish the other stuff and dont want to overheat it or put on the wrong things? thnx in advance bb

IMO, I think the best route to go would be to use a factory clutch fan and shroud. I do not think flex fans do a good enough job on the street especially with AC. To me flex fans just make a bunch of noise and are not very efficient.i have seen numerous occasions where guys had overheating problems solved by eliminating a flex or electric fans and going back to the factory clutch fan and shroud set up. I know it doesn't look as cool, but it works. Just my thoughts...Tim

I second the factory clutch fan. The flex fans are directly tied to the engine. They waste horsepower, make a bunch of noise and by their own definition, "flex". I have seen two come apart in about thirty years of hanging around all this junk we work on. On the first one, a blade came off and went through the hood on a Coronet. Never stand in line with a fan or any rapidly spinning piece of machinery.
The factory units are coupled like a torque converter. As the demand for cooling increases, the frictional coefficiency increases and drives the fan faster. When not needed, as in going down the highway, the fan basically freewheels. This saves HP. The factory shrouds are ideal. Find the stock stuff and run it, you will be happier in the long run, unless you want to really start screwing with stuff!
Cheers, MFR

ok guys thats what i wanted ur opinion,i already ordered a flex fan even before i wrote this post but i think its going to be to big anyway 18" so ill start looking for a clutch fan..anybody know what the size of that should be i mean inches across? and tim ill let u know thnx guys

Don't use a flex fan!!! Unsalf, robs H.P.the and may not fit your shroud. Stock clutch fan or grab an electric fan from a late 90's camaro or firebird. I don't have info right now, but you can wire everything so the fan turns on when the a/c is on just like how all cars are today.

ok i wont i promise lol after hearing all im looking for a clutch fan and shroud now, thnx for the input guys really appreciate it. bb

I live in florida where its hot a ****. Iam running a duel flexlite 5200 cfms and i wouldnt go to a cluch set up

well i ended up doing both lol, i got the clutch fan on and shroud and i put 2 10" fans in front just in case or if and when i need it at stop lights and such,so if that doesnt do it nothing will lol.thnx guys for ur input

yea thats what i wanted and decided to do it that way cause down here in florida we get some of that sticky wheather and in traffic its no fun at red lights and im working on my a/ hope it gets 38degrees 🙂
