I'm trying to install a '93 L05 350 with a 700r in my '85 Monte. I want to keep the stock mechanical speedometer to save some $ but the ECM needs a speed pulse to make it run. Does anybody know how to get an electronic signal with a mechanical speedo?

You shouldn't need a speed input unless the transmission is an electronic version (4L60E) without the TV cable.

I saw somewhere that the speed sensor works with the MAF sensor to keep the tune right

All your TBI engine cares about is load. It uses temperature (CTS), throttle position (TPS), and vacuum (MAP) to calculate timing and fuel delivery. Once warmed up it uses the O2 sensor to fine tune the mixture. The only thing the speed sensor does is control shift points on the electronically shifted 4L60E. A standard (TV cable type) 700r4 doesn't need it. The only other thing I can imagine a speed sensor might effect is the top speed fuel cut-out. An aftermarket chip would eliminate that anyway. A stock chip may set a code but it'd still run fine.
