Let's also not forget that depending on where you live you may not be able to get the car inspected, registered ect. And even if you aren't saddled with those requirements yet there is always the chance that you will have to deal with it in the future.

There's a right way and a wrong way to clean up some of the excessive emissions equipment. Yes you can clean up under the hood without butchering.

Really the only thing that's really uglifying the engine compartment and making it harder to access other areas that may need worked on is the A.I.R. system. This entire system can be simply removed. Do only that and you'll have a much nicer looking engine and it will not effect how the engine will run.

Please do not listen to anybody that tells you to dump the computer. The computer is not robbing you of any horsepower nor is it adding much extra crap under the hood.

When my 85 442 was bone stock ( only removed A.I.R. system and had an exhaust system upgrade ) ran 15.54@88 mph. That's pretty good for what it was!

As said, unless everything is removed properly and kept somewhere safe it will loose value. A custom tuned non CCC Qjet to the 307 HO specs from Everyday Performance and a recurve vacuum advance HEI from Ken at Everyday Performance as well, should gain a few hp. Another big gain is the horrible factory exhaust. The manifolds and crossover pipes are a joke. Hard to say if the cat is half plugged either. From the Y pipe back is actually free flowing, the front is horribly constipated. I would leave the original carb all the computer stuff if working properly. I would carefully remove the stock exhaust parts and store them all away. Thornton shorty SBO stainless headers with the 2.25" outlet with a O2 bung added or Hedman full length and 2.25" or 2.5" full dual exhaust with a H or X pipe if you want will improve performance a noticeable amount. As DoubleV said, remove and plug the air system as well. His 15.5 is a 1+ second improvement in the the 1/4 mile.

I second the motion that anything you remove from that car you best keep. If you don't, and later you want to restore it to stock, you'll be crying like a little beeyotch when you have to scour the countryside looking for replacements.

I'm in the same boat as you.. ~60k miles, all original 86 Grand Prix with a 305..

My whole thing was "Why not run it? OBD1 and all"

If it is going to be replaced by a 383 stroker or a 6.6L 400, I could just keep the original 305, but.. there's nothing wrong with it, so why not run it?

I did decide to let mine breathe a little better.. headers/duals and I have an intake manifold for it (Edelbrock performer with EGR). I am working on getting a carb to have rebuilt by everyday-performance since he has a week lag time and I can't be down for a week (and costs a ****ing fortune, mind you... Over $100 more than an already rebuilt carb from someone else - including core - but everyone here says "everyday-performance... everyday-performance... everyday-performance..." You guys are killing my bank account)

BUT, find ONE unhappy customer! Everyone that has sent their carb to him has bolted it back on with stellar results. There are other options; have you priced a Dean Oliver? I actually had the passing thought of putting a Q-jet back on the 67, but for the $1000 price tag, I can have TB EFI. $350 for an Everyday is a steal!

GM did make a performance chip for Chevy CCC systems called the ZZ4 PROM. A member on the MCSS forums named Bitflipper sells ZZ4 clones that he burns out. Very worthwhile upgrade through it requires a 87 or 88 ECM swap. Another option that works on any GM CCC system is Crane Cams rare performance ECM that had dashpots for adjusting the tune without burning PROMs.
