RHODE ISLAND
hi all,
my 85' 442 w/307 engine has an oil leak, im noticing every time i pull it out of the garage.
it started off as a drop here, a drop there, but now its getting worse.
can anyone tell me where should i start looking, or whats the most common areas known for this?
i also noticed some oil moisture near the valve covers, but i know thats not the main curprit, do i change the cover and gasket or just the gasket on that part?

thanks.

Well there are several places the oil can leak from. Two of the most common would be the rear main seal and the valve covers. Where are the oil drops at on the ground when your car is parked? Does it look like it could be between the engine and transmission? Rear main seal. Does it look like it is coming off the side of the engine and not as far back as the transmission? Valve covers. Is it up front of the engine? Could be timing cover.

I agree there are many options in regards to where the leak is located. I recommend cleaning the engine off at home...and letting it run at idle for a while, than look around with a pair of gloves on to find the location of the leak.

yea, im gonna try that this weekend. makes sence, thanks.

more than likely it's the rear main seal. i have the same problem on my regal 307. when you change the oil next time put a bottle of the Lucas oil leak stuff and that should hold you off for a while. I'm not putting any time or money in changing the rear main seal when i'm planning on swapping in the chevy 350 in the next few months anyway.

I had a leak at the very back of the rocker arm cover and the oil dripped down the back of the block.
A gasket change only fixed it. Also, look through the inspection hole in the bellhousing for any engine oil at the bottom.
