Believe me when I want her to go its flat on the floor gas mileage be damned. But when I ran nearly 1,000 miles round trip to an automotive event (lol our own lil power tour) I appreciated being able to buy 25 gallons less fuel, Shoot that 100 bucks could have bought me a hooker for the night! 
On a more serious note not spinning the snot out of me big block on the interstate afforded to me by the overdrive & lock up converter meant a lot more to me than the gas. So did not over taxing the cooling system by having again an OD & a lock up converter. With an old 3 speed I would either have to slow down or gear down & use a low stall converter & then i would have a slow boring car or.. pay the consequences of continuous high rpm & overheating.
