glad you're thinking olds 350 and not sbc... if you're building the 307 for originality's sake, I completely understand-but if you plan to build it to be a fire breather, I think you'll be disappointed. like double v said, do some quick searches on craigslist. I actually came up on a 403 with right at 98k miles on it a month ago for right at $400 with a 350 trans. only thing hat kept me from doing it was that the cutlass is going to be the wife's toy, and I don't want the extra torque scaring her into a ditch(remember, she's a rustang girl  ). don't limit you searches to just cutlass', some of the other big body olds cars had them in them as well. good luck!

ok i look into add more... the one i have looked into just havent turned out, guess im looking in the right place. And i live in OHIO about 30-45 minute north of dayton. Ill keep looking.

"My first "hot rod" was an 87 Cutlass. I was about 18 then and on a serious budget. Guess what I put into it? Chevy 350 The Horror!" ---67rstbkt
this made my day

Just keep looking. Once in a while you get lucky, like my Buick 350 (*which isn't in the car yet). It may have cost me a hair under 2K, but it was a complete engine with a fresh .30 over rebuild, a Comp Cams camshaft, a new coat of black paint, and I even got to hear it run before I bought it.
Just keep an eye out on craigslist or your local auto finder ads. It's not uncommon to score a running engine cheap just because someone else is upgrading. Just act fast.

I thought you were getting a used 307 with a warranty through school. Am I remembering that wrong?

Glad I could be of assistance - I have a few pictures of it I still need to dig up, scan (pre-digital age), and upload here one of these days 😀

@shanghaismith - chill out, dude. He's just a kid asking for advice. Cars are supposed to be fun, we need the children - they are the future  The more that the younger generation gets involved with older cars, the better chance there is of long term surviveability for these cars.

i still can get that engine, i just havent pulled the trigger on it.... sorry about the miss spelled words, i look over everything before i submit, guess i didnt see anything this time.

If you put a SBC in it, don't waste your time with te rectangular valve covered variety. Go with the LS1, LS2, etc. Good running examples can be found without killing a bank account. Sure, there's some conversion costs, but you'd be doing that anyway. So get bang for the buck.

That said, it's nice to see you want to stay with an Olds engine. 😀
