Erratic Speedometer

I busted my old speedo (don't ask-pissed me off) and was able to get another. I plugged the new-used one in and it read fine to 50kph (30mph) and then shot right up to 100kph and hovered there the whole way home. When I stop it would return to 0 and then do the same thing.
I intend to pull it again as I'm hoping I'm just not on the cable right, but just thought I'd post and ask to see if anyone has ever heard of this problem.
Speedo ****ed? Cable ****ed?

speedo...the cable either works or it doesn't.

Nevermind, there was a ****ing paperclip lodged in the spinny majiggee. I guess this speedo spent some time in a box of bits and pieces including paperclips, lol!
I failed to noticed the little bugger when I put it in 😳
