I am gauging interest in this type of body molding. If you are doing a paint job (like I am) and this type of molding was on your car would you replace it if it were available in the market. Approximate cost being around $60 to do the entire car.

The only way that trim is going back on a car I own is if it's a daily driver. Kinda takes away from the clean look.

I had my car painted two years ago and the factory side moldings were bad, I wish I coulda found a set brand new, I did though go aftermarket like blake442 suggested, and they look damn good as well on my car I might say 🙂

If it were truly factory style, I think it would be a good thing. So far, all of the aftermarket molding is textured and pretty much doesn't come close to the factory look which is smooth. IMO, it wouldn't be worth a flip to do it any other way. All 85 442s regardless of upper color choice had gunmetal gray molding, btw.

lol...Not all 442's had the body side moldings. Mine had them and I bought NOS to replace them when I repainted the car 20 years ago. They quickly faded and I took them off only to find that one of them trapped water and was beginning to cause rust issues on the rear quarter. After removal, I had to respray the quarter to make it look right. I personally like the look without them.

Yes, I'd love to get some exact reproductions.

Me too.

That's true. What I meant was that if you got the option factory installed, they only came in gunmetal gray for 85 442 regardless of upper body color. They did upper body color for other Olds G-body models and later 442s. I've seen "restorations" that used black, textured, flat-crowned stuff that was just too narrow. While incorrect from a restoration point of view, when cut correctly (squared off looking ends) it looks pretty decent, though. I actually would have preferred them to match upper body color. I guess they did on the gray 85 442s.

As far as painting them, I did a test for someone else with an 87 442 restoration that had NOS gray side molding, I sprayed a piece of old gunmetal molding with SEM semi-gloss vinyl paint and let it weather a few months on the back deck. It didn't fade, crack or peel, so he went with that.
