I'm sure this has been covered before, but I searched and couldn't find an exact answer. I am installing a factory gauge cluster from an 86 Grand Prix in my 80 LeMans. It came with idiot lights. I know all I need to do to for the oil pressure and water temp gauges is change the sending units.
What I don't know is about hooking up the tach.....did the factory wiring harness include the tach plug? If not, how do I wire it from the harness plug that goes into the back of the tach/speedo unit? Do I need to put a filter on it (I have seen different opinions on this).
Any insight anyone has would be appreciated.

Yes and no. Yes the tach will just plug in. No the wire may not be there that should go to the distributor. In my case there was no tach so no wire so I ran one from the engine to the back of the dash. There WAS a white wire on the cluster harness that went to the back of the tach connection so I jumped onto that. I believe it was from the old computer (83' car) but I had removed it long ago. In your case just run a wire to where it should be on the harness connector. I have never found nor used a filter even though the book says there should be one.

Thanks Bonnewagon, I appreciate the info.
