I think there are far better bands from the grunge era than Nirvana. They were ok, but listening to Nevermind, you get the feeling that Cobain hated life and wanted to die. Other bands of that style had far more range, like Pearl Jam and The Smashing Pumpkins. Sure, they would not exactly be called upbeat, but they were not anywhere near as completely negative as Nirvana was. Sadly, today's music is way too corporate. Alternative used to mean groups with something decent to say that may have been out of the mainstream. Now that they are the mainstream, we get crap like My Chemical Romance, emo and the really bad "screamo",etc. In the old days, it was groups like REM. Basically, today's alternative is the same old pop themed crap that has always pleased the corporate music business but with a different sound. Hair metal was similarly corporatized in the 80's, with nothing meaningful to say. I like some of it, just like I like some modern stuff, but it is not really my style. I prefer music with a more melancholy way of seeing life. I do, however, find almost all Country and Hip Hop to be intolerable. Too formulaic for my taste. How may songs can you write about 20 inch wheels and big booty hoes before it all becomes trite? I mean, more than it already is?

I graduated HS in 92, so I was (and still am) completely into bands of that time: Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, STP, Nirvana, PJ, Smashing Pumpkins, Mother Love Bone, Primus, Alice in Chains, they are very relevant and actually had talent! Something lacking today. I'll always be a classic rock fan, but the music from my era was 'alternative' rock from 91-94.

Fav Album(s) - What's the story Morning Glory ( Oasis ) & Sticky Fingers ( Stones ). For some reason I have not grown tired of either of these and can listen to them front to back without skipping thru songs.

I grew up on a steady diet of The Doors, Beatles, Springsteen, Zeppelin, ZZTop... courtesty of my older sisters crates and crates of albums.

Now I listen to everything from Eminem to Metallica to Original Rock like Johnny Cash and Elvis.

My only dislikes are Pink Floyd ( too depressing ), New Country, and hard-core rap with the 'dissin and the b*tches and the grills on their teeth.

Any Sabbath, Metalica, Satriani, Motorhead, basically anything with loud guitars and drums and barely understandable lyrics .lol. Going to see Rush in Minneapolis in a month!!!!!!!!!!!!

you get the feeling that Cobain hated life and wanted to die
picked up on that did ya? that's why he wrote a song "i hate myself and want to die" on the beavis and buthead soundtrack i believe.
nirvana was over rated, yes. it wasn't that they did something truly new, just that they did it in just the right way that it appealed to more people. then the sheeple jumped on the bandwagon. i like 'em but Alice in Chains definately was definately the best altenative/grunge band (and i believe they were out before nirvana)
some other good ones White Zombie. SLIPKNOT, Slayer, Pantera, AC/DC, MEGADETH, Arch Enemy, Breaking Benjamins, Chevelle, Lacuna Coil, Octavia Sperati, Charlie daniels, Rammstein, Devildriver, Korn, NIN...
