Unless you need specific parts for a restoration or want to undertake an ambitious project, they are probably not worth it. Let me explain why:

Those cars in excellent condition today might fetch between $8-10k. They are not super rare, or even that hard to come across. On places like E-Bay and in Hemmings, they are there all the time. You could easily put that much or more in to restoring one, and there are many other cars out there that would be more worthy of that amount of investment to restore. Then in the end most of the originality of the SS or 442 would be gone after the restoration with body panels replaced, powertrain replaced etc, still making one that you could find for $10k that is all original worth a lot more money.

I truthfully don't care how anyone else might spend their money, 🙂 but I do know how much it can take to fully restore one of there cars, and it would have to be a purely "for the fun of it," project rather than be considered an investment. JMHO, of course!

well.. i was gonna grab it as a parts car... for my 87 supreme.. and the shell for a project...juts because around here a t top olds is hard to find..

he wont part it either... i wanted the interior, wheels and rearend..

i found my car by road for a $2,000 perfect condition outside and then proceeeded to spend $22,000 more once second engine, spies hecker paint job,12 bolt, 700r4, all new autometer gauges, guted interior and repainted all plastic, por15 floors, dynamat extreme, new carpet, headliner , visors, 15" corvette ralley, power buckets from 442, dyed console bought and installed. b&m mega shifter, shaved antenna, polished saden ac compressor,442 spoiler.
yea all this started from a 307 rebuild, haaaaaa haaaaa

If u want em, buy em. If they r that bad, buy them cheap. That way if u cut them up for parts, u don't feel so bad.

They are probably perfect parts car candidates, and you'd likely get your $1000 back from each car in parts if you have the patience and space to do that sort of thing. However you still run across people who think they are sitting on a goldmine because the car is a 442 or an SS, even if it is little more than a pile of scrap with some useable parts in it, so you have to really check it out to see what is truly worthy on it.

Yep, even in the best of initial condition, things add up and it's never a free ride. My LeMans was inherited through the family, so I got it for free in 2000. It only had 38k original miles at that time, and was in "minty" condition. Since then I have done the following to keep it in excellent shape, most were just things that wore out from time and not use:

Headliner: $150
Tires: $500
Brakes: $100
Shocks: $80
Cat back exhaust: $200
New base/clear paint: $1300
Transmission seals: $50
Cam/lifters/timing chain and assoc. parts: $500
Rear main seal and assoc parts: $200
Wiper pump: $30

That's $3110 in to it over 7 years or $444 a year. Not at all bad to drive a cool car for less money a year then the average person spends a month on a new car payment 😀 but just shows what might go in to an old car even when finding it in the best of condition to begin with.
