if you want to be really careful and don't have an exact provenance, i'd pull the oil pan and check the bearings. prefferably you plastigauge them, but even a quick eyeball check can tell you if things are bad.

OK update time. Engine is at the garage the install is being done. The guy was hazy on cam details but did tell me it was an aftermarket "mild street" cam - did not recall duration or brand. Said he had it running with a factory Qjet (which he kept and put on his 455). Engine turned freely by hand.
new motor mounts (worn) done
new transmission mount (worn) done
new U-joints being done
new transmission lines (unavoidably kinked removing radiator) still need to locate
new oil pan and valve cover gaskets (may was well while it's out) buying gasket kit, guy gave me a valley gasket with the Performer intake
new timing chain and cover seal (may was well while it's out) guy gave me a brand new Cloyes tru-roller
oil and fuel filters done
new hoses done
fluids done

Also with the engine (long block assembly minus valve covers) he gave me a Vac dist. New oil pump and a p/s pump, with the double pulley on the front and another starter ... I also picked up a rust free decklid ... total cost for the stuff I picked up in KC (minus travelling/rental/fuel) .... $200.

Adding to the list ...

trottle cable
transmission cable
4 speed floor shifter
crossmember
frame bracket (not sure what this second piece looks like)
spark plugs
gasket set
engine paint
header gaskets
non-CCC Qjet for Olds
having Y-pipe fabbed to connect headers and delete converter.
I should have plenty of vacuum line and heater hose.

and sorry I thought my headers were shorties (aint seen them in awhile they've been in storage) but they are Hedman's
