My home for the weekend. First day of PA trout season.

Good luck.
I’m hoping to be able to contribute to this thread this season. After a few years off the water I’ll be keeping my boat at a marina on Sandy Hook bay in NJ again. Very excited to get the family back out on the water.

Sandy Hook bay
I can't wait either. The water is warm for this time of year. I was at Ft. Hancock in 1973 for an inspection. The SSG gave me his pole and said to sit on the Army dock and try to catch dinner and his Wife would cook it up for us. I filled a bucket with fat flounder! The Navesink River was always a good early Flounder spot.

Unfortunately I’ll definitely miss the spring run, since I need to finish the 36 project that im doing as a side job. Hopefully I’ll be able to fish into late fall, like I used to to make up for it.

You won't be missing much. Back when any size Flounder was take-able, the idiots took everyhting. As a result Flounder are few and far between. In NY the season is April/May, 2 fish 12". A fish that big used to make the cover of The Fisherman. Personally, if all else fails, give me the Fall when the fish are fat and hungry.

Melville Reservoir last night. The biggest Walleye was camera shy.20230505_201945.jpg20230505_202012.jpg20230505_202014.jpg20230505_202721.jpg20230505_202959.jpg20230505_203353.jpg20230505_203435.jpg20230505_205041.jpg

Usually don't keep that many here is the haul from last night. Best of three so far today.

My Wife is doing better, hopefully her contacts will help protect her eyes since she doesn't produce tears, poor vision and pain, comes and goes. Apparently she caught 5 fish while I was on the other side of the road, so she won tonight.20230506_184229.jpg20230506_193300.jpg20230506_200751.jpgIMG_20230506_210037.jpg

I think it is more the urbanization of the area around the Navesink. In 1988 there was a fish kill in the Barnegat bay that killed all the summer flounder yearlings and after that the crab population exploded for a decade and there are still no fluke in that nursery.

You could have taken hundreds of 10 inch fluke out of that bay and wouldn't have hurt the population - would catch them with stick poles. It was the change in water quality that made them locally extinct. People think it is over fishing - it is not always. Overfishing applies to the collapse of the big cod fisheries off Nova Scotia, etc... The sport fish populations have crashed in the mid atlantic due to changes in water quality related to urbanization. I'm convinced of it. The regulations to preserve whatever scraps are left after we destroyed the garden of eden are a psyop - make people feel warm and fuzzy about throwing back a sponge crab or letting a big striper go after landing it. Stripers have huge mortality upon catch and release - especially the big egg layers the bureaucrats want to 'save'.
