F the Flex fan........I bought the best heavy duty clutch fan at Napa a few years ago and have had great luck with it...Someday I might switch to an electric one, but prolly not......I dunno if it will save that much HP to make it worth the cost and aggravation.....Just like the power steering pump to pump swap...Yeah you save 8 hp or so and a 'lil weight...Great for an all out strip car, not so for a street/strip car................And as always, JMO 8)
over the years I think I have used almost every kind of fan (except electric).
Myself I have seem factory clutch fans come apart (they fly through a steel hood like a hot knife through butter). I've heard of this with the aluminum flex fans, but never actually seen it. I have also used those plastic flex fans. And I really liked the plastic one until it flew apart in -35 cold weather and took some big chunks out of my fan shroud. My favorite fan I have ever used was a factory flex fan from a V8 Monza.
My mechanic has been building race cars and street rods for 30+years. He has a very good reputation and there is literally a waiting list (months) to get into his shop. When I brought my car in to get my 355 installed, one of the first things he said was to get rid of my flex fan. He recommends either electric or the factory style clutch fan. But with my luck I can't find my stock fan, so I'm just gonna run the flex until I can afford electric.
In my opinion electric is the way to go. A bit more pricey, but worth it in the end.
