We are slowly emerging from our caves.....

"Ontario drivers can now carry electronic proof of their auto insurance on their smartphones or other devices.

Finance Minister Rod Phillips says the pink paper insurance slip isn't being eliminated yet, but being able to display the information on a phone can save drivers from rummaging through their glove compartments.

He says there will be a one-year phase-in period, when insurers will have to issue a paper card in addition to the electronic option if it is requested.

Phillips says the electronic cards will feature safeguards that won't allow them to be altered or edited, and privacy concerns are top of mind.

Drivers will be responsible for making sure their phone can display the proof of insurance, even with a poor signal, drained battery or damaged screen."

Can we dump the front plate too?

All of which is great for the millennials and Tweetie Pies but for my generation not so much. For starters, no personal cell phone. Why? They have to remain in perpetual contact with their towers, screaming "Here I am, Here I am," every so many times per microsecond. That equals instant tracking ability for Big Brotherhood in any form. Cell phone is off? Nope. Remote accessibility and tracking is still possible; you don't get to know until the pounding on the door. Only sure way to turn off a cell is to pull the battery. Other point is that while Officer Friendly is reading your cell phone to acquire your insurance info, what else is he surfing or skimming as well? Great way for the police to do electronic surveillance and information acquisition and you'd never know. And of course there was the enhanced driver's license which Ford and friends just formally notified us users that it will be scrapped as of our renewal time. "Oh, it cost too much money to maintain!" Bull. it was one of the few programs that not only paid its upkeep, it made a profit for the province. Lazy and incompetent. Putting the soap box away now, this is a topic that sits almost at the top of my personal list to rant about and that isn't what this site is about. Stay Alert!! Canada needs more 'Lerts!!
