I drove over a rough railroad track today, and heard the noise of steel on pavement. I pulled my car over and walked back to find a 9/16" head bolt on the road. It's about 2 1/4 inches long, and half of it is coarse thread. When I picked it up about 30 seconds to a minute after it fell, it was still a bit warm. The last 4 or 5 threads have some sort of oil on them...anybody have a clue what it might have fallen out from? Thanks

Looks like a exhaust manifold bolt....

Thats what I was wondering...but I thought it should be hotter than that, and I also looked at one of my exhaust bolts and it looks like more a stud that has a nut screwed onto it...i'll take a better look in the morning. Thanks though

Could be a lot of things. That is a very common thread for a variety of under hood accessories. However, if it is a Buick V6, that would rule out anything on the engine as they are metric engines. If it is an SBC, it would be an SAE engine in an otherwise metric car. As for Pontiac and Oldsmobile V8's, I am not really sure as I have no experience with them.

Thanks guys. I'll look into that as well. It's a 305 with a turbo 350 by the way.

It was an exhaust manifold bolt. Thanks guys
