Found an Olds 455 w/th350

That's what makes me sort of believe it's zero miles I don't even think he even ever had the distributor... I think he was putting the motor together, never finished, and now just needs to get rid of it. So cool all I would need is a distributor and I have an available carb for it. I should be able to use the clutch fan, and accessories off the 307 right? Particularly the alternator, and power steering? My A/C compressor hasn't worked in years, and I won't need the smog pump so there's not much point to putting those back on.

I'm sure I'm going to need a new radiator, but since it's cold and I don't have to drive far to work I can probably get away with the original one temporarily.

The guy says he's got a brand new set of headers for it too, maybe I'll just put some of those "purple hornies" header mufflers on them and call it a day and not do an exhaust... Those should sound pretty sweet. :wink: Think ones for an A-body will fit in a G-body?

G-body's are a header nightmare. I've heard of a few people that have tweaked A body headers to fit, but most just run manifolds.
 
They're basically a freebie though... so I'll bend them up and dent them if I have too. :lol: And all headers are a nightmare unless you've got a street rod or something (Honda and Jeep SBC headers are easy too, but yeah who cares haha). I can't even tell you how hard it was to get the headers back on the SBC in my Firebird, it was pretty much the hardest part of putting the motor back in. That and the starter were the only part that gave me trouble. Especially the drivers side that goes on from under the car, took about an hour to put it back on... Putting the actual engine in, and bolting up the mounts, flexplate, and bell housing all together didn't take that long. :lol:
 
I've put a couple sets of Hooker Headers in G-bodies with 425/455's... forget what they were, but they had one tube that went outside the frame rail into the wheel well, and back......... looked really cool, not to hard to set up... sounded mean as hell...

might have been Super Comps...

Get a new fan clutch, they're cheap, and if you can find a 7-blade fan to replace the stock 5 blade one, you're even better off.

88hurstolds had a post a while back of the very slight mods required to run the 307 accessory brackets on the 455.
Just had to make a couple spacers and it all bolted right up.

Unfortunately, the A-body headers will not work on the G-body.
Take them anyways and sell them somewhere like http://www.realoldspower.com, then put the money towards a proper set of headers or some reproduction W-Z manifolds.
 
Is the olds 425 a good motor? I was reading a bit about them a while back and they've got a better crank and rods than the 455 supposedly, and I know they use a different piston unfortunately which is hard to find compared to standard Olds pistons. But have any of you guys had one? What is there to know about them?

I'm just curious.

pistons aren't hard to find... you can get them through Mondello, and if you're machine shop guy can work a catalog you can find 'em..

I've built 2 of 'em and didn't have a problem finding pistons..

I think the last set I bought were Sealed Power, but Federal Mogul probably makes 'em too...
 
Just an FYI, stay away from Mondello! Unless you like throwing money down the drain.

Anything he sells you can get from any number of other Olds performance shops for far less and have the luxury of not dealing with a shady character.

The 425 crank is better than a 455 from the standpoint it is forged. However the rods tend to be weaker and I've been told their limit is around 500HP.

I've delt with mondello numerous times, and actually found somethings from him cheaper than other places (like a set of offy valve covers)... somethings you can buy cheaper other places.. but I've never had any bad dealings in the past 8 years or so.. always seemed helpful, and I've talked to Joe over the phone multiple times with questions etc... bought a cam a few weeks ago (engle) from him.. and he gave me the same price I would have got from any other engle dealer...

As far as the rods, I haven't had a problem with them...
 
Didn't think Joe was out there with them anymore......should be in Crossville, TN at his Tech Center?


Heard Lynn was running the show at Mondello Twister, and heard some awful things about customers' disappointment.....
