sorry just noticed you asked... not really sure, but i would use 16-20, anything thicker than 16 prob too thick to work with for that area, not sure, and i dont think i would go thinner than 20 but that just me

That's good cause I just bought some 20 gauge. I think I am going to just slide the 8 inch wide strip under the the roof and tack it from the top and use filler to smooth it out, after I cut out the rust.

its not that hard to do it right, i wouldn't use too much filler cause can make for a mess if you should accidently hit that area at some point... if you need help with advice, shoot me a pm, ill try to walk you through how i would do it, dont wanna hijack your thread
