i just got a 86 cutlass that i want to fix up and make into a weekend car. dont plan on taking it to the track. just the local car shows and cruise around town. since the fuel level sender is bad, and i have an extra fuel cell around i am planning on putting it in the trunk and tossing the fact. fuel tank. i am going to vent it through the floor and cut out a spot for the sump to run the lines under the car. my question is do i have to put a fire wall against the rear seats. and if so do i have to put one under the speakers since there are a few holes on that panel. and if so what material does it have to be made out of. tin, aluminum, steel. i would like to know if anyone is running a street car without a rear firewall.

To be honest, that sounds like an awful lot of work to go through for a car that isn't strictly a drag car just because you have a bad fuel sender.

Why not just get another sender and replace it?

well i got the fuel cell and mounts already plus the bulkheads i was gonna run new 1/2 fuel line anyway. and that fuel cell will save a few pounds compared to the fact. gas tank. since i already have what i need i figured why not. also this is the gas tanke from 1986 and the car did sit for 2yrs half full. when i helped my friend get it running i siphoned it out and it was brown. put a new filter and it got clogged right away. so i know there is crud in it. and a new tank cost 160. i can use that 160 on somethin else. and i decided im gonna save some money by fabbing up my own rear firewall since its only 4 plates. cuz im assuming some day im gonna start taking it to the track just not right away. and you know once u start running it u want to make it faster. so im just gonna get the fuel system takin car of now and do it right.

X2. Plus another thing you should consider.........If it's in that good of shape where you'll take it to shows, why hack it all up in the trunk? JMO of course! :?:

Here ya go : viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17295&start=0&hilit=fuel+cell

If you were creative, you could figure a way to bolt vs weld the brackets in like I did.

I only drilled 2 holes along with welding.

You may end up with 10 holes if you make the brackets bolt in.

Holes are easy to fill at a later date to keep the purest happy.

Shotgun you did a nice job on that fuel system. Its well thought out.
Bjohn Like the other guys I would simply clean out the tank & replace the sender. Especially since its not a dedicated drag car. Then you don't need to worry about a firewall or gas smell in your car either. Also I have seen 3/8" line feed as much as 600HP.
