my gas gauge was off, and i was told by a guy that i know that i need a new sending unit.

well, here i am, my tank is dropped, and i literally just took out the sending unit.

after realizing that it is about $70 for a new unit, i was wondering if anybody knew how to detect a problem with it, or how to test the sending unit itself if posible.

There is a spec for the sending unit, cant remember what it is. You will hook up an ohmeter to the sending unit wires, move the arm slowly. The readings you get should rise slowly an be within the specs. The spec will be a resistance value for full and empty. If that is okay, check the wiring for the sending unit. If there is a bad connection or corroded wires it will cause the readings to be off.

I tested the sending unit for ohms of resistance, but got a different results each time i tested, never getting more than about 220 ohms.

so i hooked it up to the car, and it reads full no problem every time, but each time i move the float from the full to empty position, i get a different reading at empty every time, i got about 1/8th full the first time, and then 1/4 full the second.

just wondering if anyone can help me out so i can possibly save the $60 for a new sending unit. Thanks!!

SENDING UNIT

THE WAY TO TEST A FUEL OR TEMP GAUGE IS TO TURN THE KEY ON THEN PULL THE WIRE OFF THE UNIT .THE GAUGE SHOULD READ PAST FULL ,THEN GROUND THAT SAME WIRE THE GAUGE SHOULD READ EMPTY .IF IT DOES THEN THE GAUGE IS OK AND THE SENDING UNIT IS BAD!! GOOD LUCK 🙂

Is there a way to test just the guage itself and does anyone know what the resistance should be on the resistor on the guage. All my guages work on my 83 calasis except the gas guage. Thanks Shanezoid.
