though i am not a expert i think its the no cat, and you running a little rich, plus i saw the exhaust set up you had on your build, maybe there is a leak, did you ever fix the clamps or are they still there? if i were you i would do a overhall on the exhaust, i know this sounds silly, but why not add some highflow cats, not only will it most likely help the problem, but you are actually saving the environment, though that sounds corny :|

sounds like a combo of running too rich & pinholes in the exhaust....

might want to check carb when it's running and check for any fuel dripping down from the rear venturi's... have been having that problem with my f-100 with a holley 4160 600cfm carb.... has never run better, but have always smelled like it was running a bit tooo rich...

comment of the cats being the problem? doubt it.... I've seen some carbed engines with points run cleaner than injected econoboxes back when I used to do state inspections....

Catalitic converters change carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. So without cats you will be putting out the "odorless killer". I doubt the cats are the problem. I would borrow a different carb from someone else and slap it on there. I bet the problem goes away. Also, higher octane fuel is more resistant to burning. So you could try some 87 in there and see if it is any better.

yeah I fixed the exhaust hangers, and my exhaust set up is a lil rinky dink, it was a cheap-o job i had a lil shop do, ran outta money after the engine was done and needed to get the car tagged and on the road, and maybe a new set up is what I'll do with some highflow cats and flowmasters..has anyone heard of flow pro mufflers? I agree, i care about the environment, lol, but more my health, and I know this isn't helping either

oh wow, don't wanna do that then, then I'll have to carry a carbon dioxide detector in my car lol...yeah I smelled under the car and everywhere else, but it seems to be more prevalent out the exhaust...so I'm guessing the carb may be the problem...I was thinking of trying an Edlebrock, and I'll try the lower octane gas first see if that helps a lil...thanks guys, I'm determined to get to the bottom of this problem!

first make sure the carb, timing, etc are tuned correctly.
higher octane fuel will require more advance
and what's the compression?

ok it's not exhaust fumes that I'm smelling, it's raw gas....I no longer have the charcoal cansiter installed and the line from the gas tank that goes to it is under my drivers side floorboard and I capped it off but I still smells! and now I noticed pressure build up when I go to take the gas cap off...what can I do to get that raw gas smell to go away?

put the charcoal canister back in. they don't cost power and they prevent fume build up.
