I truly believe the box on my 2004 Super Duty is being held up by the drop in bed liner. I have a 2015 box waiting for paint and install but now I will get to repair the bottoms of the doors with it. Still looks better then a friends 2004 Chevy that has less miles and body left on it.
I had seen when I was a temp at Ford Motor Company Buffalo Stamping Plant that a couple of body plugs in the rear wheel houses of the F series truck is all it takes to slow the rust in the wheel arches.

Do this-

Then you can rinse out with hose or pressure washer and fluid film inside. A couple hole plugs and no one will notice.
 
My 02 Ranger is like that, the bed is nearly shot. My neighbor has 03 Chevy pickup that is even worse. It just seems pickups tend to rot out faster than cars. Those 4.6s do last a long time, especially if they have an oil cooler. They last for 300k to 400k in police and taxi duty. Through they are expensive to mod.
 
I know on the older F series and on my Super Duty just plugging the holes circled in red slowed the progress of rust. Assembly Robot clamping guide pin holes that are right in line with the wheel splash.

If I knew then what I know now I would have had this truck oil coated from the start. My next door neighbor has a GMC that he took delivery of a day before I bought my Super Duty and he had it oil coated from the start. So far he only has had rocker panels replaced and he is around 195,000 miles on his truck. I'm just over 151,000 but went with the Z Tec undercoating the Dealership offered. I still love this truck, I had to throw the first set of plugs in the 5.4 at 149,000 miles, being a 2 valve engine I dreaded doing them because of the blow out problems but took my time, slightly over torqued the plugs and knock on wood no problems. I have just over 151,000 on it now.
 
I have an F150 and I work for Ford and it's the truth! You should see the sh*t already popping up on these aluminum trucks!
Is it just ford though? My chevy is as rusty as it gets. My last ford was so rusty im pretty sure it was in hurricane harvey (seriously)My uncles 09 chevy has rusted qtrs and my stepdads 12 ram 1500 sport is starting to rust the bottom of the bed out. And it has a roll up bed cover. They make these trucks 50k and they still start to rust out in 10 yrs atleast here in the midwest.

There is a channel on youtube I think it's called FordTechMakuloco, he has a ton of videos on modular engine spark plugs, ones covering the 3V and 2V engines. His explanation is dead on, but readers digest version, the 2V plugs were under torqued from the factory, the original ford spec was 11 ft lbs, it wasn't enough, coupled with the low thread count (early motors had even less threads) they tended to work loose, damage threads and blow out. If they come out clean, torque them to 25 ft lbs dry, and you won't have an issue. Also, only use the factory Motorcraft plugs!

It's not just Ford. They all rust. We're on a GM forum so everyone likes to bash on Ford. I work for Ford, and so I see a lot more Ford trucks up close and personal than I do anything else. I still lean towards Ford when it comes to my own trucks, mostly because I always liked GM but I dont like what they've done as a company and what they've done with their product line. I don't exactly like the direction Ford is going but I still like them more than GM.

My neighbor's Chevy pickup has worse rust than my Ranger. I think what happens is that the greater air turbulence pickups have scoops up extra road grime, salt, and water which increases the rate of rusting. That and the fact 4x4s ard driven in bad winter weather more often than cars.

FordTechMakuloco ROCKS! It's his advise I took when doing the plugs. Torqued them at 25 ft lbs with a small amount of anti seize just due to the steel and aluminum. Same with the Motorcraft plugs and I did coils while I was there. With this truck being a 2004 I believe it has the Romeo heads with the extra 2 or 3 threads.
