Hi I would like to know if a 78 malibu frame is the same as a 87 Cutlass, I have my Dads 87 that sat outside with 40,000 miles and the rear frame is bad but the car is very clean and can get a 78 frame, would like to redo for My son.

They are going to be very similar and are probably interchangeable but they are not exactly the same. The transmission mounts were changed in 1984 to allow the 2004r. So if you have a 2004r in the Cutlass you will have to add a provision the the '78 frame. You can order a bolt-on from the same guys who make the double hump crossmembers or just weld a tab on. I do not know if there are any other differences.

You will have to measure-out the frame anyway to make sure it is square (trust me - do this); just check the dimensions then to make sure.

i think the front horns on the Malibu are going to be shorter also.

Nope. They're the same. The only difference between the '78 and a '87 is the trans crossmember mounting like mentioned above.

Somebody should make a sticky about frame interchangablility. Seems like almost once a week somebody asks this question or one similar to it...

The transmission mount is all i can think of are the frames the same on a 2 door and 4 door ?
