contemplating taking the engine and transmission out of the lemans and putting it in my chevette cause no one wants the lemans so has any one done this ?

... ummm kinda. That was my senior year high school Autoshop project. My shop teacher and 5 guys took the running gear out of wrecked 83 or 84 Buick T-Type and fabbed everything up for the Chevette with the turbo and all. It broke my heart to cut up what was then a 5 year old car of my dreams. It took us a full 2 semesters but I sure learned a lot.

I remember we had to cut out the firewall for clearance, reinforce the whole body then set it on the frame after sections were shortened and narrowed from the T-Type. Kinda ended up with the Chevette on the narrowed G-Body frame with the wheels sticking out.

We did all that even did and come the end of the year we pulled the motor and trans and scrapped what was left.

That car gave me the insperation to buy my first car, a 1976 Monza Spider with the 305 & Auto. Just a little bigger than the Chevette and went like a bar of soap on the shower floor when you punched it.

How much Hp are you goin to be pushing?
I put a Pontiac 301 with a whopping 200 horse and it went high 13z.
My pictures are on the shop computer.

I would fix the G body because it will be worth more money some day than a b*st*rd child Chevette. Not that I would give up on the Chevette! There was a killer version of the Chevette in Great Brittain. There it was marketed as the Vauxhaul Chevette and there was a variant that I believe was tuned by Lotus. I saw one on You Tube once and it really kicked *ss. Then, there are the other variants of the T body: The Holden Gemini ( Australia), Isuzu I Mark and the Isuzu Impulse ( called the Piazza in other countries). ( It may also have been called the Pontiac Firefly in Canada, as Canadian models have different names than US models sometimes. It was also the Pontiac T-1000 in the US, but it was no Terminatior...:lol🙂 A popular swap in Australia is the 13B rotary, but other small high output engines could also be used to make a fun, cheap car with good handling dynamics.
