ok i put in a fuel cell with a gm sending unit.now my gas gauge reads full even when the cell is empty.i shouls be able to just ground out the wire that went to the gas gauge and it should drop it to empty correct.it's the pink wire in the back of the car right?

What's the OHM rating on the sending unit? Our cars use a 0-90ohm sender. 0 being empty and 90 being full.

You can put an OHM meter in the pink wire and check the reading directly. I just ran into a situation where I had an aftermarket gauge that was setup for a universal aftermarket sender and my fuel gauge would read full all the time even though my ohm meter was showing empty.

well our cars are at 8o ohms.this sending unit is at 16 full and 0 empty. so i'm thinking that it's going to be off.but if i groung the wire it should go to empty right?

GM senders are either 0-30 ohm or 0-90 ohm. No such thing as an 80ohm unless its some oddball aftermarket deal.

I believe your right though. It should read empty if you ground it.

i should of said that the stock unit is 80 ohms and the sending unit in the fuel cell is 16.but it doesn't go to empty when i ground it.i'll do some more research tomorrow.

Reading full, sounds like an open wire to me. There's probably a loose connection at the tank, OR there's no ground to the sender. Do you have a real ground wire running to the sender, or are you using the tank as a ground? Also did you confirm that the arm on the sending unit isn't stuck at the top of the tank somehow?

if you disconnect the wires from the sender then what is the ohm reading of the sender right now?

well i tested the sending unit and it reads 0.28 ohms at empty which it should.i have continuity between the pink wire for the tank and ground.how can i test the gauge itself,do they ever go bad.one more thing i swap out the stock cluster with 442 clusters awhile ago.everything seemed to be working before.i'm clueless now.
